Taras Shevchenko Park (Ukr. Park imeni Tarasa Shevchenka) — a park in the center of Kyiv. On the opposite side of Volodymyrska Street from the park stands the main (“red”) building of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv.The park was opened in 1890 under the name “University Square”. Before the park was laid out, the site was a vacant lot where cows usually grazed. In 1898, a monument to Nicholas I was unveiled in the university square; it was removed in 1920. In 1939, on the site, to mark the 125th anniversary of Shevchenko’s birth, a Kyiv monument to Shevchenko by Matvey Manizer was unveiled.
