Maryynskyi Park in Kyiv

Mariinskyi Park (former names: Palace Park, Oleksandrivskyi Park, Victims of the Revolution Park, Soviet Park) — a park in Kyiv, located opposite the building of the Verkhovna Rada and the Mariinskyi Palace between Mykhaila Hrushevskoho Street and the slope toward Parkova Road. It is one of the most popular parks in Kyiv. It is a unique monument of past landscape art.

Monuments

The park contains monuments:

• to the heroes of the October Uprising of 1917, at the mass grave of workers and soldiers who died during the uprising for Soviet power in Kyiv in November 1917. The monument was installed in 1927 (architect V. M. Onashchenko) in front of the park entrance. During the Great Patriotic War, the monument was destroyed. It was restored and opened on 6 November 1948 (architect Z. S. Chechik). The pedestal is made of black marble, with a red granite bowl on it. The monument’s total height is 2.5 m. It was destroyed again in spring 2014.
• to the participants of the January Armed Uprising of 1918, at the mass grave of the uprising’s participants. The current monument was unveiled on 21 December 1967. A 4 m-high bronze figure of a worker raising the banner of the revolution stands on a 2.5 m-high pedestal made of black labradorite. Sculptors V. P. Vinaikin and V. V. Klymov, architect V. H. Hnezdilov.
• to General M. F. Vatutin, at the commander’s grave. The monument was unveiled on 25 January 1948. Authors: sculptor E. V. Vuchetich and architect Ya. B. Belopolskyi. The statue of Mykola Vatutin, made of grey granite, stands on a pedestal of polished black labradorite. The monument’s stylobate is designed as a mosaic carpet (artist S. A. Kyrychenko; executed by artists K. K. Sorochenko, N. H. Klein, L. Ye. Khaiutina, T. A. Shylovska and B. A. Korin). The monument’s total height is 8.55 m.
